What can I do if algae shows up in my pool?
We offer many solutions based on your individual needs. We will make educated recommendations after performing a water sample test. We carry BioGuard products such as:
My water looks cloudy. How can I fix that?
Your best course of action is to bring us a water sample. We can test your water and provide personalized instructions on the best corrective measures. Some suggestions we may provide are:
What is the purpose of sanitizing my pool?
Sanitizing pool water kills bacteria that can be harmful to bathers and also aids in controlling algae. You need to constantly check and maintain your sanitizer level because bacteria enter the pool continuously from many sources. We offer several chlorine/bromine based sanitizer options including the BioGuard Mineral Springs® program, or explore our non-chlorine sanitizer program, SoftSwim®.
What is Free Available Chlorine?
This is the active chlorine in the water that has not combined with organic matter and is therefore available for killing bacteria and algae. The proper range for free chlorine residual is 1-3 ppm. Below 1 ppm can cause swimmer irritation, cloudy water and even allow algae to grow. You should test often throughout the summer when the pool is used most.
Why do I have to "shock" my pool water?
"Shocking" your pool water chemically destroys the organic contaminants introduced by bathers and the environment. These products restore water clarity, help maintain water balance and eliminate the main causes of eye and nose irritation.
What products can help me with stains caused by metals in the water?
How often should I clean my pool filter?
It is recommended that pool filters be cleaned at least two times a pool season - mid-summer and in the fall - or more often if needed. The filter should also be cleaned at spring opening if it wasn't cleaned as part of the pool closing procedure in the fall. Strip Kwik® removes oil and grease while Kleen It® removes dirt, scale and metals from from all filter types. Use SoftSwim® Filter Cleaner for SoftSwim pools.
How can I prevent scale from forming?
Use BioGuard Scale Inhibitor to help prevent scale formation that can cause serious damage to pool surface and equipment. Keeping pH and calcium hardness in range will also help to prevent scale buildup.
What is pH?
It's a way to measure the acidity or alkalinity of water. This is the most important part of chemical balance because it protects the equipment, allows the sanitizer to do its best job and increases swimmer enjoyment.
Ideal range 7.4 to 7.6
What is total alkalinity (TA)?
It's a measure of the water's ability to resist changes in pH. pH can be affected by environmental factors such as acid rain, pollution, run-off from the surrounding land, and fertilizers-just to name a few. Keeping the TA at the proper range will help prevent pH from fluctuating and help prevent scale and cloudy water.
Ideal range 125 to 150 ppm
What is calcium hardness (CH)?
It's the amount of dissolved calcium in the water. Keeping CH at the proper range will help protect equipment and keep water sparkling. It also helps prevent cloudy water.
Ideal range 175 to 225 ppm (200 to 275 ppm for plaster and SoftSwim®)
What is Chlorine Demand?
Chlorine Demand is the consistent inability to maintain a chlorine residual in a pool. It is caused by a build up of contaminants which creates and "overload" on the sanitizing system. Quite simply, it means that more sanitizer is required that is being provided to the water.
There are two ways to treat chlorine demand. The first is to add the appropriate amount of chlorine. The quickest way to find out the amount needed is to have us run a chlorine demand test on the Accu-Demand30®. The second way to treat chlorine demand is to drain some of the water and replace with fresh water. While this will not completely take care of the demand, it can help lower the amount of product needed.
How do I collect a water sample?
THE 5 KEYS TO BASIC POOL CARE
The 5 essentials of pool maintenance described here will give you a basic understanding of how your pool functions. For a carefree swimming season, learn about the 5 keys and visit us any time you need assistance or expert advice. Pool care can be simple when you have a plan for routine maintenance and use the right products.
KEEP IN MIND ...
Each pool maintenance key is very important. Consider each key as a simple, preventive maintenance step.
Pool water must be circulated for maximum sanitizer effectiveness. The more your water is in motion, the harder it is for bacteria and algae to take hold. Debris is captured by your filter, too. The best time to circulate the water is during the day, for 10 hours or more.
The filter is one of your most important pieces of equipment. It removes both visible debris and most microscopic matter. Generally, a filter should be backwashed (the removal of material trapped on or in the filter media) when the water pressure in the filter reaches 8 to 10 psi above normal. (Check manufacturer's guidelines.) Because backwashing does not remove oils and deeply embedded debris, every filter needs to be chemically cleaned regularly. We can help you establish a filter maintenance program.
Some swimming pools have areas with little or no circulation. This is where algae and bacteria can begin to grow. At least once a week, the walls and floor should be brushed and vacuumed to remove debris that the filter misses. Brushing is a must, even if you use an automatic pool cleaner or retain a weekly service.
Every pool has characteristics that must be regularly measured and adjusted. Most important are the pH and the level of active sanitizer. By testing these two factors at regular intervals, you'll understand how bather load, weather and product application affect the water. Test your pool water two or three times per week. Also, bring a sample to us when you open and close your pool, and every four to six weeks during the season. This will help you maintain proper water balance and greatly reduce the potential for problems.
The last step in a total pool maintenance program is applying the right products to your pool water at the right time. This will help you:
TROUBLESHOOTING
Not everything always goes as planned; sometimes your pool has problems. As a BioGuard dealer, we are able to correctly diagnose just about any pool condition. Below are some common problems even experienced pool owners can have along with our recommended solutions. Your best solution is to bring a water sample to us for expert water analysis.
BLACK ALGAE
What is it? Black algae are single-celled organisms that grow in large colonies. They contain chlorophyll like other algae, but they also contain compounds that mask the green color. It forms in cracks and crevices on pool surfaces (especially plaster finishes) and can grow somewhat protected from the surrounding environment due to the formation of a protective layer on the outside of the cell. This makes black algae more difficult to treat and it is somewhat resistant to normal chlorine levels.
To kill black algae:
IMPORTANT NOTE: Brushing is extremely important when treating black algae because that protective layer has to be broken in order for the sanitizer or algicide to come in contact with the cells.
GREEN ALGAE
What is it? Common “green” algae are microscopic, aquatic plant-like organisms and can be free-floating or wall clinging. Algae grows in salt or fresh water and thrives in temperatures above 85°F. In fact, it can “bloom” overnight. Algae spores constantly enter pool by rain, wind, animals, toys or swimsuits and left unchecked, can clog filters and create surface damage.
To kill green algae:
YELLOW (MUSTARD) ALGAE
What is it? Mustard algae is a chlorine-resistant form of green algae that often resembles dirt or sand on bottom or sides of pool. It contains compounds that act as a defense mechanism against the oxidation efforts of sanitizers, helping it survive even in highly chlorinated conditions. This factor can even create a large chlorine demand in certain situations. Mustard algae can be brushed away very easily, but returns quickly.
To kill green algae:
5 steps to prevent algae growth:
CLOUDY WATER
What is it? Cloudy water is a hazy, murky appearance that is caused by introduction of suspended particles that are invisible to the naked eye. A similar analogy would be the particles in air that cause smoke. These impurities are introduced to the water from a myriad of environmental sources, even bathers and source water. Particles can intensify and cause water to cloud due to improper water balance, low sanitizer levels and/or lack of routine oxidation, poor filtration or inadequate circulation.

EVAPORATION/HEAT LOSS
What is it? Local climate and weather conditions have a significant impact on the energy efficiency of a pool. Evaporation is more noticeable in drier areas and climates with clear, cold nights often see reduced water temperatures due to exposed water surfaces. These two effects are interrelated as well since when pool water evaporates, heat is also lost from the pool to the air. Other environmental conditions such as humidity or strong winds can also contribute to the problem. The result is increased costs to constantly refill and reheat your pool.
To prevent evaporation and heat loss:
EXCESSIVE CHLORINE LOSS
What is it? The consistent inability to maintain chlorine levels is also called “chlorine demand” and is most often caused by a high level of inorganic and organic contaminants in the water. Those contaminants force the chlorine to work extremely hard to oxidize them, leaving little chlorine to protect swimmers. Proper chlorine levels cannot be reestablished without first eliminating the contaminants. External factors such as sunlight and heat also contribute to chlorine loss.
To fix excessive chlorine loss:
To prevent excessive chlorine loss:
FOAMING
What is it? Foam can be caused by applying a foaming algicide in pools with jetted returns, attached spas or water features. Foaming can also be caused by a foreign contaminant such as soap or oil entering the pool or the build up or organic contaminants in the pool water. Foam should dissipate over time, but the use of anti-foaming agents will help clear the foam much more rapidly.
To eliminate foaming:
To prevent foaming:
SCALE
What is it? Scale formation is created when there is an oversaturation of minerals in the pool water and water conditions do not allow them to remain dissolved or soluble. Those conditions may be high calcium hardness, high temperatures and/or high pH. The minerals drop out of solution and attach to pool walls and equipment and can damage them if the scale is not removed. Salt cell generators are especially susceptible to scale buildup due to the intense water conditions within the cell itself.
To remove scale:
To prevent scale:
METAL STAINING
What is it? Pool water, equipment and surfaces can become discolored due to contamination, sunlight and the presence of metals in pool water. Metals are often introduced into the water via source water, equipment (corrosion of heater parts), pool chemicals or other pool devices. Changes in water balance (usually from an increase in pH or application of a shock product) can cause the metals to become insoluble and allow them to drop onto the pool surface, resulting in staining. Iron and copper are the two most common types stains. Some stains may be organic in nature (such as black algae and pink slime) and should be treated with algicides and shock.
To remove metal stains:
To prevent metal stains:
EYE/SKIN IRRITATION
What is it? Eyes and skin can become irritated after spending time in the pool for various reasons. Out of balance pool parameter, specifically pH, can cause eye and skin irritation in swimmers. A build up of contaminants in pool water can also create chloramines (a chlorine smell) and contribute to eye/skin irritation.
To adjust pH:
To remove contaminants:
To prevent irritating conditions:
WATERLINE BUILDUP
What is it? A greasy coating on the walls along the waterline of the pool is evidence that there is a saturation of undissolved materials in the water while a ring of rough patches may be a sign of scale. Most of the time, oils, lotions, and other organic contaminants that enter the water via swimmers cause the greasy buildup. Scale conditions are due to hard water problems or failure to correct water balance issues. Please visit the Scale troubleshooting section for more info on that problem.

SALT WATER POOL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
This sampling of FAQs should help with some basic salt water pool information and troubleshooting issues. As always, visiting our store and meeting with us is always your best bet. Have more questions? Contact us today.
Do salt pools have chlorine in them?
Yes. The basis of the Mineral Springs system is the formation of hypochlorous acid (free available chlorine) through the electrolysis of salt in water. Electrolysis occurs through a device called an electrolytic chlorine generator (ECG) that is installed on your pools system. Salt pools are chlorine pools and an ECG is the equipment through which salt is converted into chlorine. Proper free available chlorine residual should be maintained at all times for adequate sanitation.
Is all pool salt the same?
No. When it comes to the quality of salt, there are significant differences. Some “pool salt” can contain impurities such as iron or organic material. Even though these impurities may be present in only trace amounts, once enough salt is added to reach the recommended level, these impurities can build up enough to cause a problem. BioGuard®’s Mineral Springs® Beginnings® is formulated with ultra pure salt. BioGuard has performed rigorous testing on the salt that goes into Beginnings to be sure that it is of highest quality and will not add unwanted “extras” to the pool water.
Is salt all I need for a saline pool?
Pools equipped with a chlorine generator MUST be balanced just as any other pool. The electrolytic chlorine generator (ECG) produces chlorine but does not provide any other means of balancing the water. In fact, the by-products produced during electrolytic chlorine generation can cause the pH to rise. High pH in pool water can contribute to cloudy water, scaling and decreased chlorine efficiency. This pH drift will need to be offset in order to keep the pH in the proper range. That’s why BioGuard Mineral Springs Renewal® includes a pH decreaser. When applied weekly per label directions, Renewal will help offset the pH drift and keep the water balanced.
In addition, the chlorine produced by the ECG is unstabilized. Especially in outdoor pools, stabilizer (cyanuric acid) is required to prevent chlorine degradation by sunlight so that it lasts longer in your pool. Both Mineral Springs Beginnings® and Convert contain cyanuric acid (stabilizer) to protect the chlorine being produced by the ECG from sunlight degradation. Most ECG manufacturers recommend a level of 60-80 ppm stabilizer.
Also, the chlorine generator does not produce any ancillary products that may improve the water balance, clarity and softness. In addition to stabilizer, Mineral Springs Beginnings and Renewal contain a water softener (to improve the feel of the water beyond that of regular salt pools) and a scale inhibitor (to protect the chlorine generator cell plates). Renewal also contains a filter aid which will help keep the water sparkling clear.
So you can see the advantages of using the Mineral Springs system far outweigh straight “pool salt”.
My pool is equipped with a chlorine generator. Does it require any other source of chlorine?
There are some instances where the chlorine generator may not be able to produce enough chlorine to overcome the contaminant burden in the pool. Pools equipped with an ECG can often struggle with chlorine demand just as any other chlorine pool might. In these instances, a larger than normal amount of chlorine may be required for treatment.
If a chlorine demand is suspected, the water can be tested by us on the Accu-Demand30® test and treated per instructions from the computerized analysis, ALEX. Also, keep in mind that these pools require routine oxidation or “shocking” just as any other chlorine pool does. Many times this can be accomplished by using a boost setting on the chlorine generator itself. Alternatively, a chlorinating product such as Super Soluble may be applied. And, as with any pool, additional oxidation will be needed after heavy bather loads, rain or if contamination is suspected.
Will phosphates in my pool’s water affect the ability of chlorine generator cells to work properly?
It is possible for phosphate in the water to combine with calcium to form calcium phosphate scale. If calcium phosphate (or any other type of scale) accumulates on the ECG cell plates, then chlorine production will be compromised. However, it is important to keep calcium phosphate in perspective. In analyzing types of scale typically found on chlorine generator cell plates, BioGuard has found that a vast majority of the scale is actually calcium carbonate (followed by a significantly smaller amount of calcium phosphate and an even smaller amount of calcium sulfate). So while it is possible for calcium phosphate scale to form, BioGuard has learned that targeting the biggest scale contributor is a better way to go.
Mineral Springs Stain and Scale is very effective at preventing calcium carbonate scale formation. Its specialized structure allows it to act both as a sequestering agent (keeping calcium carbonate in solution) and as a dispersant (improving the separation of particles and preventing settling). This is important as some products are only dispersants and have very little sequestering capability. This means that they only do half the job that Mineral Springs Stain and Scale does. The effectiveness of this product has been proven through ten years of testing and many happy pool owners.
Can I use products for a traditional chlorine pool with my chlorine generator?
Some ancillary products that are used in traditional chlorine pools may not be as effective in pools equipped with a chlorine generator because they may not be able to withstand the harsh environment that exists within the chlorine generator cell. Scale inhibitors are a good example of this. Some scale inhibitor products are somewhat sensitive to chlorine. While these products are effective when used in traditional chlorine pools, they may not stand up to the harsh environment that exists inside the cell. Mineral Springs Stain and Scale was chosen because of its ability to better withstand this harsh environment. It is important to note that Mineral Springs Stain and Scale is not the same formula as Pool Magnet® Plus or Scale Inhibitor.
While some scale inhibitor products are fine for traditional pools but less effective in chlorine generator pools, there are other scale inhibitor products that would not be appropriate to use in any type of chlorine pool. These compounds are extremely chlorine sensitive and offer no benefit when used in any type of chlorinated environment. In fact, some can lead to the formation of chloramine; so not only would you get no benefit from the product, but it could cause additional problems in your pool.
Other ancillary products such as water softeners (Optimizer Plus®), water clarifiers (Polysheen® Blue) and filter aids (Sparkle Up®) are appropriate to use in both traditional chlorine pools and those equipped with a chlorine generator. Water balancing products (Balance Pak® 100, 200, 300 and Lo ‘N Slo®) may also be used in both types of pools. Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) is necessary in any outdoor chlorine pool (traditional or salt-water) to protect the hypochlorous acid from sunlight degradation.
Can sulfate based pH adjusters be used in pools equipped with a chlorine generator?
As mentioned above, calcium sulfate scale is possible; however, it is the least likely type of scale to form. The formation of this type of scale is not pH driven as it is with calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate. It is driven by the concentration of calcium and sulfate in the water. When Mineral Springs® products are used per label directions, the sulfate level in the pool typically does not reach the amount needed to force the formation of this type of scale. In addition, scientists use parameters like solubility constants for specific compounds to predict which compounds are likely to stay in solution and which are not. Looking at the solubility constant for calcium sulfate tells us that this compound is more likely to stay in solution than calcium carbonate or calcium phosphate…which confirms that this will be the last type of scale to form. These theories were also confirmed through research and testing as there was very little calcium sulfate present on scaled cell plates tested by BioGuard. For this reason, BioGuard continues to offer a safer alternative for pH adjustment in pools equipped with a chlorine generator.
In the event that calcium sulfate scale were to form, it can be more difficult to remove. Mineral Springs Cell Cleaner will remove calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate and calcium sulfate based scale. The acid in Mineral Springs Cell Cleaner is at the appropriate concentration for scale removal and no dilution is needed. Note that cell cleaning with dilute muriatic acid may not be as effective in removing calcium sulfate
Can copper based algicides be used in pools equipped with a chlorine generator?
It depends on the product. Many copper based algaecides contain copper triethanolamine. Triethanolamine is a nitrogen containing compound which is not very chlorine tolerant. Therefore, once inside the chlorine generator cell, this compound will break down resulting in free copper which has the potential to stain. This condition can result in copper based scale on the chlorine generator cell plates. In addition, because triethanolamine contains nitrogen, as it breaks down it has the potential to contribute to chloramine formation. Just as with certain sequestering agents, the use of these types of compounds will cause the active ingredient to be destroyed and could result in problematic compounds being formed.
On the other hand, Banish® does not contain triethanolamine. Banish contains polyacrylate which is extremely chlorine tolerant. This product has been tested with a high level of free chlorine with no product degradation and no staining.

DRY ACID- Product used to lower pH and total alkalinity; preferred over muriatic acid (HCl) for handling, storage and safety issues. BioGuard Lo' N Slo®.
FREE (AVAILABLE) CHLORINE- Chlorine in a form capable of bacteria and algae destruction. Preferred range: 1.0 to 3.0 ppm.
OXIDIZE-(see Shock Treatment)
PH- A way to measure the acidity or basicity of water. Ideal range 7.4 - 7.6.
PPM- Parts Per Million, a measurement for chemical concentration.
REAGENT- Tablets, powder or liquid material for use in water testing.
SCALE- Coarse calcium deposits on swimming pool wall, floors and circulation plumbing.
SATURATION INDEX- A value based on water temperature, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and pH. The value predicts the tendency of pool water to be corrosive, neutral or scale-forming.
SHOCK TREATMENT- Adding an oxidizing compound to the pool water to chemically break up (oxidize) contaminants such as suntan oils, cosmetics, perspiration and chloramines.
STABILIZED CHLORINATING PRODUCTS- Form of chlorine used to sanitize pool water. Favored for its economy and ability to remain active in strong sunlight.
STABILIZER- Cyanuric acid; a compound that prevents the dissipation of chlorine residuals by sunlight. BioGuard® Stabilizer 100™
SUPERCHLORINATI0N- Adding enough chlorine to reach 10 ppm free chlorine residual.
TOTAL ALKALINITY (TA)- The amount of the alkaline components in water. TA acts as a buffer against rapid pH fluctuation. Ideal range 125-150 ppm.
UNDESIRABLE COMPOUNDS- Substances introduced in the water by people or the environment that interfere with ideal pool conditions.
