  • Banish® to kill all types of swimming pool algae.
  • Spot Kill® which is formulated to kill black algae on walls.
  • Spot Kill WP which should only be used on white plaster pools is also formulated for killing black algae on walls.
Black Ornamental Divider

My water looks cloudy. How can I fix that?

Your best course of action is to bring us a water sample. We can test your water and provide personalized instructions on the best corrective measures. Some suggestions we may provide are:

  • Lo 'N Slo® when pH is high.
  • Strip Kwik® or Kleen It® when filter is dirty.
  • Smart Shock®, Burn Out Extreme®, Burn Out® 35, or Easy Shock and Swim® for shocking when Free Available Chlorine level is low.
  • Polysheen® Blue which is also an excellent water clarifier.
  • Note: For BioGuard SoftSwim® pools, use SoftSwim Filter Aid and Flocculent.
Black Ornamental Divider

What is the purpose of sanitizing my pool?

Sanitizing pool water kills bacteria that can be harmful to bathers and also aids in controlling algae. You need to constantly check and maintain your sanitizer level because bacteria enter the pool continuously from many sources. We offer several chlorine/bromine based sanitizer options including the BioGuard Mineral Springs® program, or explore our non-chlorine sanitizer program, SoftSwim®.

Black Ornamental Divider

What is Free Available Chlorine?

This is the active chlorine in the water that has not combined with organic matter and is therefore available for killing bacteria and algae. The proper range for free chlorine residual is 1-3 ppm. Below 1 ppm can cause swimmer irritation, cloudy water and even allow algae to grow. You should test often throughout the summer when the pool is used most.

Black Ornamental Divider

Why do I have to "shock" my pool water?

"Shocking" your pool water chemically destroys the organic contaminants introduced by bathers and the environment. These products restore water clarity, help maintain water balance and eliminate the main causes of eye and nose irritation.

Black Ornamental Divider

What products can help me with stains caused by metals in the water?

  • Pool Magnet® Plus ties up copper and iron to prevent stains.
  • Sparkle-Up® aids in removal of copper and iron from the water.
  • SoftSwim Stain Control ties up metals to prevent stains in SoftSwim pools
Black Ornamental Divider

How often should I clean my pool filter?

It is recommended that pool filters be cleaned at least two times a pool season - mid-summer and in the fall - or more often if needed. The filter should also be cleaned at spring opening if it wasn't cleaned as part of the pool closing procedure in the fall. Strip Kwik® removes oil and grease while Kleen It® removes dirt, scale and metals from from all filter types. Use SoftSwim® Filter Cleaner for SoftSwim pools.

Black Ornamental Divider

How can I prevent scale from forming?

Use BioGuard Scale Inhibitor to help prevent scale formation that can cause serious damage to pool surface and equipment. Keeping pH and calcium hardness in range will also help to prevent scale buildup.

Black Ornamental Divider

What is pH?

It's a way to measure the acidity or alkalinity of water. This is the most important part of chemical balance because it protects the equipment, allows the sanitizer to do its best job and increases swimmer enjoyment.

Ideal range 7.4 to 7.6

  • If it's too low, use BioGuard Balance Pak® 200
  • If it's too high, use BioGuard Lo 'N Slo®
Black Ornamental Divider

What is total alkalinity (TA)?

It's a measure of the water's ability to resist changes in pH. pH can be affected by environmental factors such as acid rain, pollution, run-off from the surrounding land, and fertilizers-just to name a few. Keeping the TA at the proper range will help prevent pH from fluctuating and help prevent scale and cloudy water.

Ideal range 125 to 150 ppm

  • If it's too low, use BioGuard Balance Pak® 100
  • If it's too high, use BioGuard Lo 'N Slo
Black Ornamental Divider

What is calcium hardness (CH)?

It's the amount of dissolved calcium in the water. Keeping CH at the proper range will help protect equipment and keep water sparkling. It also helps prevent cloudy water.

Ideal range 175 to 225 ppm (200 to 275 ppm for plaster and SoftSwim®)

  • If it's too low, use BioGuard Balance Pak® 300
  • If it's too high, use BioGuard Scale Inhibitor.
  • If over 400 ppm, it may be necessary to partially drain the pool and add source water with lower CH.
Black Ornamental Divider

What is Chlorine Demand?

Chlorine Demand is the consistent inability to maintain a chlorine residual in a pool. It is caused by a build up of contaminants which creates and "overload" on the sanitizing system. Quite simply, it means that more sanitizer is required that is being provided to the water.

There are two ways to treat chlorine demand. The first is to add the appropriate amount of chlorine. The quickest way to find out the amount needed is to have us run a chlorine demand test on the Accu-Demand30®. The second way to treat chlorine demand is to drain some of the water and replace with fresh water. While this will not completely take care of the demand, it can help lower the amount of product needed.

How do I collect a water sample?

  • Circulate your pool or spa water 24 to 48 hours before taking a water sample.
  • Using a clean plastic container, scoop about one quart of water from elbow-depth.
  • Seal the container and bring it to us for testing and analysis.
  • Bring in a water sample at least once every month during the pool season (once every two weeks is preferred)

THE 5 KEYS TO BASIC POOL CARE

Decorative Curl Line

The 5 essentials of pool maintenance described here will give you a basic understanding of how your pool functions. For a carefree swimming season, learn about the 5 keys and visit us any time you need assistance or expert advice. Pool care can be simple when you have a plan for routine maintenance and use the right products.

KEEP IN MIND ...

Each pool maintenance key is very important. Consider each key as a simple, preventive maintenance step.

  • CIRCULATION

Pool water must be circulated for maximum sanitizer effectiveness. The more your water is in motion, the harder it is for bacteria and algae to take hold. Debris is captured by your filter, too. The best time to circulate the water is during the day, for 10 hours or more.

  • FIILTRATION

The filter is one of your most important pieces of equipment. It removes both visible debris and most microscopic matter. Generally, a filter should be backwashed (the removal of material trapped on or in the filter media) when the water pressure in the filter reaches 8 to 10 psi above normal. (Check manufacturer's guidelines.) Because backwashing does not remove oils and deeply embedded debris, every filter needs to be chemically cleaned regularly. We can help you establish a filter maintenance program.

  • CLEANING

Some swimming pools have areas with little or no circulation. This is where algae and bacteria can begin to grow. At least once a week, the walls and floor should be brushed and vacuumed to remove debris that the filter misses. Brushing is a must, even if you use an automatic pool cleaner or retain a weekly service.

  • TESTING

Every pool has characteristics that must be regularly measured and adjusted. Most important are the pH and the level of active sanitizer. By testing these two factors at regular intervals, you'll understand how bather load, weather and product application affect the water. Test your pool water two or three times per week. Also, bring a sample to us when you open and close your pool, and every four to six weeks during the season. This will help you maintain proper water balance and greatly reduce the potential for problems.

  • CHEMISTRY

The last step in a total pool maintenance program is applying the right products to your pool water at the right time. This will help you:

  • Provide a sanitary swimming environment.
  • Balance the water to protect the equipment and pool surfaces. Unbalanced water can permanently damage both.
  • Provide brilliant, sparkling water that's inviting.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Decorative Curl Line

Not everything always goes as planned; sometimes your pool has problems. As a BioGuard dealer, we are able to correctly diagnose just about any pool condition. Below are some common problems even experienced pool owners can have along with our recommended solutions. Your best solution is to bring a water sample to us for expert water analysis.

Thin Line Divider

BLACK ALGAE

What is it? Black algae are single-celled organisms that grow in large colonies. They contain chlorophyll like other algae, but they also contain compounds that mask the green color. It forms in cracks and crevices on pool surfaces (especially plaster finishes) and can grow somewhat protected from the surrounding environment due to the formation of a protective layer on the outside of the cell. This makes black algae more difficult to treat and it is somewhat resistant to normal chlorine levels.

To kill black algae:

  • Use Banish® as it kills all types of swimming pool algae
  • Spot Kill® is specifically formulated to kill black algae on walls
  • Spot Kill® WP should only be used on white plaster pools.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Brushing is extremely important when treating black algae because that protective layer has to be broken in order for the sanitizer or algicide to come in contact with the cells.

Thin Line Divider

GREEN ALGAE

What is it? Common “green” algae are microscopic, aquatic plant-like organisms and can be free-floating or wall clinging. Algae grows in salt or fresh water and thrives in temperatures above 85°F. In fact, it can “bloom” overnight. Algae spores constantly enter pool by rain, wind, animals, toys or swimsuits and left unchecked, can clog filters and create surface damage.

To kill green algae:

  • Use Banish® as it kills all types of swimming pool algae
Thin Line Divider

YELLOW (MUSTARD) ALGAE

What is it? Mustard algae is a chlorine-resistant form of green algae that often resembles dirt or sand on bottom or sides of pool. It contains compounds that act as a defense mechanism against the oxidation efforts of sanitizers, helping it survive even in highly chlorinated conditions. This factor can even create a large chlorine demand in certain situations. Mustard algae can be brushed away very easily, but returns quickly.

To kill green algae:

  • Use Banish® as it kills all types of swimming pool algae
rectangle border frame

5 steps to prevent algae growth:

  • Maintain a sanitizer residual of 1-3ppm
  • Do an initial and weekly application of a preventative algicide (such as Backup 2)
  • Shock routinely
  • Make sure there is adequate circulation and filtration
  • Brushing surfaces is vital

CLOUDY WATER

What is it? Cloudy water is a hazy, murky appearance that is caused by introduction of suspended particles that are invisible to the naked eye. A similar analogy would be the particles in air that cause smoke. These impurities are introduced to the water from a myriad of environmental sources, even bathers and source water. Particles can intensify and cause water to cloud due to improper water balance, low sanitizer levels and/or lack of routine oxidation, poor filtration or inadequate circulation.

TTo fix chemical causes of cloudy water:

  • Test water to determine current chemistry conditions
  • Add Lo 'N Slo® if pH is high
  • Add BurnOut® 73 or BurnOut® 35 to oxidize contaminants

To fix equipment causes of cloudy water:

  • Improper filtration is the largest cause of cloudy water
  • Use Strip Kwik ® or Kleen It ® to clean dirty filter media
  • Add Pool Tonic™, Natural Clarifier or Polysheen Blue® to enhance filtration
  • Check pool returns and make sure they are angled properly

To prevent cloudy water:

  • Add Pool Juice 911™ to your weekly maintenance routine to improve clarity and reduce contaminant levels
  • Backwash filter when necessary
  • Chemically clean filter every 4-6 weeks
  • Replace filter media as directed
  • Run pump at least 10-12 hours per day
  • Maintain proper water balance
  • Oxidize pool weekly to destroy contaminants
  • Shock pool weekly to destroy contaminants (such as perspiration, suntan lotions, hair sprays, body oils, urine, pet dander, and cosmetics.)
Thin Line Divider

EVAPORATION/HEAT LOSS

What is it? Local climate and weather conditions have a significant impact on the energy efficiency of a pool. Evaporation is more noticeable in drier areas and climates with clear, cold nights often see reduced water temperatures due to exposed water surfaces. These two effects are interrelated as well since when pool water evaporates, heat is also lost from the pool to the air. Other environmental conditions such as humidity or strong winds can also contribute to the problem. The result is increased costs to constantly refill and reheat your pool.

To prevent evaporation and heat loss:

  • The solution is to either physically cover your pool when not in use or to apply products that work to reduce the impact on the water surface.
  • Add Smart Shield™ as needed to create a thin, invisible barrier that will reform after activity
Thin Line Divider

EXCESSIVE CHLORINE LOSS

What is it? The consistent inability to maintain chlorine levels is also called “chlorine demand” and is most often caused by a high level of inorganic and organic contaminants in the water. Those contaminants force the chlorine to work extremely hard to oxidize them, leaving little chlorine to protect swimmers. Proper chlorine levels cannot be reestablished without first eliminating the contaminants. External factors such as sunlight and heat also contribute to chlorine loss.

To fix excessive chlorine loss:

  • Take a water sample to your BioGuard Dealer to determine the extent of the demand
  • Add Pool Tonic™ to help remove contaminants
  • Add BurnOut® 73, BurnOut® 3 or BurnOut® 35 to correct sanitizer levels

To prevent excessive chlorine loss:

  • Add Pool Juice 911™ to your weekly maintenance routine to reduce contaminant levels
  • Maintain an appropriate sanitizer residual of 1-3ppm
  • Shock/oxidize routinely or as needed depending on bather load
  • Test water frequently and adjust as needed
  • Routinely check for circulation and filtration issues
Thin Line Divider

FOAMING

What is it? Foam can be caused by applying a foaming algicide in pools with jetted returns, attached spas or water features. Foaming can also be caused by a foreign contaminant such as soap or oil entering the pool or the build up or organic contaminants in the pool water. Foam should dissipate over time, but the use of anti-foaming agents will help clear the foam much more rapidly.

To eliminate foaming:

  • Apply Anti Foam to get rid of foam quickly
  • Add Pool Juice 911™ to remove contaminants that may be causing the foam

To prevent foaming:

  • Switch to non-foaming algicide such as Banish® or Algae All 60®
  • Shock/oxidize routinely
  • Add Pool Juice 911™ to your weekly maintenance routine to reduce contaminant levels
Thin Line Divider

SCALE

What is it? Scale formation is created when there is an oversaturation of minerals in the pool water and water conditions do not allow them to remain dissolved or soluble. Those conditions may be high calcium hardness, high temperatures and/or high pH. The minerals drop out of solution and attach to pool walls and equipment and can damage them if the scale is not removed. Salt cell generators are especially susceptible to scale buildup due to the intense water conditions within the cell itself.

To remove scale:

  • Add Scale Inhibitor to gradually remove scale from pool surfaces
  • Use a brush and Off The Wall® to quickly clean surfaces near the waterline
  • Use SaltScapes™ Cell Cleaner to remove scale from salt generator cells

To prevent scale:

  • Add Scale Inhibitor for traditional chlorine pools and Mineral Springs® Stain and Scale or SaltScapes™ Scale Defender for salt pools
Thin Line Divider

METAL STAINING

What is it? Pool water, equipment and surfaces can become discolored due to contamination, sunlight and the presence of metals in pool water. Metals are often introduced into the water via source water, equipment (corrosion of heater parts), pool chemicals or other pool devices. Changes in water balance (usually from an increase in pH or application of a shock product) can cause the metals to become insoluble and allow them to drop onto the pool surface, resulting in staining. Iron and copper are the two most common types stains. Some stains may be organic in nature (such as black algae and pink slime) and should be treated with algicides and shock.

To remove metal stains:

  • The key to stain removal is identifying the stain, making it soluble again and removing it from the water
  • Erase® Stain ID Kit helps identify the specific type of metal stain in your pool
  • Use Iron Stain Remover to eliminate recent stains
  • Add Pool Magnet® Plus: Ties up metals in pool water
  • Sparkle-Up®: Aids physical removal of metals through filter

To prevent metal stains:

  • Pool Magnet® Plus: Ties up metals in pool water
  • Sparkle-Up®: Aids physical removal of metals through filter
Thin Line Divider

EYE/SKIN IRRITATION

What is it? Eyes and skin can become irritated after spending time in the pool for various reasons. Out of balance pool parameter, specifically pH, can cause eye and skin irritation in swimmers. A build up of contaminants in pool water can also create chloramines (a chlorine smell) and contribute to eye/skin irritation.

To adjust pH:

  • Test water to determine current chemistry conditions
  • Test water before adding product to ensure which factors need to be adjusted
  • Add Lo 'N Slo® if pH is high, Balance Pak® 200 if the pH is low

To remove contaminants:

  • Add BurnOut® 73 or BurnOut® 35 to oxidize contaminants
  • Add Pool Tonic™, Natural Clarifier or Polysheen Blue® to enhance filtration

To prevent irritating conditions:

  • Keep pool water balanced according to suggested parameters.
  • Add Pool Juice 911™ to your weekly maintenance routine
  • Backwash filter when necessary
  • Shock pool weekly to destroy contaminants (such as perspiration, suntan lotions, hair sprays, body oils, urine, pet dander, and cosmetics.)
Thin Line Divider

WATERLINE BUILDUP

What is it? A greasy coating on the walls along the waterline of the pool is evidence that there is a saturation of undissolved materials in the water while a ring of rough patches may be a sign of scale. Most of the time, oils, lotions, and other organic contaminants that enter the water via swimmers cause the greasy buildup. Scale conditions are due to hard water problems or failure to correct water balance issues. Please visit the Scale troubleshooting section for more info on that problem.

To remove waterline buildup:

  • Add Pool Tonic™ to remove contaminants such as oils, lotions and grease
  • Add Scale Inhibitor to gradually remove scale from pool surfaces
  • Use a brush and Off The Wall® to quickly clean surfaces near the waterline

To prevent waterline buildup:

  • Add Pool Complete™ to your weekly maintenance routine to help keep surfaces cleaner
  • Backwash filter when necessary

SALT WATER POOL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Decorative Curl Line

This sampling of FAQs should help with some basic salt water pool information and troubleshooting issues. As always, visiting our store and meeting with us is always your best bet. Have more questions? Contact us today.

Decorative Line

Do salt pools have chlorine in them?

Yes. The basis of the Mineral Springs system is the formation of hypochlorous acid (free available chlorine) through the electrolysis of salt in water. Electrolysis occurs through a device called an electrolytic chlorine generator (ECG) that is installed on your pools system. Salt pools are chlorine pools and an ECG is the equipment through which salt is converted into chlorine. Proper free available chlorine residual should be maintained at all times for adequate sanitation.

Decorative Line

Is all pool salt the same?

No. When it comes to the quality of salt, there are significant differences. Some “pool salt” can contain impurities such as iron or organic material. Even though these impurities may be present in only trace amounts, once enough salt is added to reach the recommended level, these impurities can build up enough to cause a problem. BioGuard®’s Mineral Springs® Beginnings® is formulated with ultra pure salt. BioGuard has performed rigorous testing on the salt that goes into Beginnings to be sure that it is of highest quality and will not add unwanted “extras” to the pool water.

Decorative Line

Is salt all I need for a saline pool?

Pools equipped with a chlorine generator MUST be balanced just as any other pool. The electrolytic chlorine generator (ECG) produces chlorine but does not provide any other means of balancing the water. In fact, the by-products produced during electrolytic chlorine generation can cause the pH to rise. High pH in pool water can contribute to cloudy water, scaling and decreased chlorine efficiency. This pH drift will need to be offset in order to keep the pH in the proper range. That’s why BioGuard Mineral Springs Renewal® includes a pH decreaser. When applied weekly per label directions, Renewal will help offset the pH drift and keep the water balanced.

In addition, the chlorine produced by the ECG is unstabilized. Especially in outdoor pools, stabilizer (cyanuric acid) is required to prevent chlorine degradation by sunlight so that it lasts longer in your pool. Both Mineral Springs Beginnings® and Convert contain cyanuric acid (stabilizer) to protect the chlorine being produced by the ECG from sunlight degradation. Most ECG manufacturers recommend a level of 60-80 ppm stabilizer.

Also, the chlorine generator does not produce any ancillary products that may improve the water balance, clarity and softness. In addition to stabilizer, Mineral Springs Beginnings and Renewal contain a water softener (to improve the feel of the water beyond that of regular salt pools) and a scale inhibitor (to protect the chlorine generator cell plates). Renewal also contains a filter aid which will help keep the water sparkling clear.

So you can see the advantages of using the Mineral Springs system far outweigh straight “pool salt”.

Decorative Line

My pool is equipped with a chlorine generator. Does it require any other source of chlorine?

There are some instances where the chlorine generator may not be able to produce enough chlorine to overcome the contaminant burden in the pool. Pools equipped with an ECG can often struggle with chlorine demand just as any other chlorine pool might. In these instances, a larger than normal amount of chlorine may be required for treatment.

If a chlorine demand is suspected, the water can be tested by us on the Accu-Demand30® test and treated per instructions from the computerized analysis, ALEX. Also, keep in mind that these pools require routine oxidation or “shocking” just as any other chlorine pool does. Many times this can be accomplished by using a boost setting on the chlorine generator itself. Alternatively, a chlorinating product such as Super Soluble may be applied. And, as with any pool, additional oxidation will be needed after heavy bather loads, rain or if contamination is suspected.

Decorative Line

Will phosphates in my pool’s water affect the ability of chlorine generator cells to work properly?

It is possible for phosphate in the water to combine with calcium to form calcium phosphate scale. If calcium phosphate (or any other type of scale) accumulates on the ECG cell plates, then chlorine production will be compromised. However, it is important to keep calcium phosphate in perspective. In analyzing types of scale typically found on chlorine generator cell plates, BioGuard has found that a vast majority of the scale is actually calcium carbonate (followed by a significantly smaller amount of calcium phosphate and an even smaller amount of calcium sulfate). So while it is possible for calcium phosphate scale to form, BioGuard has learned that targeting the biggest scale contributor is a better way to go.

Mineral Springs Stain and Scale is very effective at preventing calcium carbonate scale formation. Its specialized structure allows it to act both as a sequestering agent (keeping calcium carbonate in solution) and as a dispersant (improving the separation of particles and preventing settling). This is important as some products are only dispersants and have very little sequestering capability. This means that they only do half the job that Mineral Springs Stain and Scale does. The effectiveness of this product has been proven through ten years of testing and many happy pool owners.

Can I use products for a traditional chlorine pool with my chlorine generator?

Some ancillary products that are used in traditional chlorine pools may not be as effective in pools equipped with a chlorine generator because they may not be able to withstand the harsh environment that exists within the chlorine generator cell. Scale inhibitors are a good example of this. Some scale inhibitor products are somewhat sensitive to chlorine. While these products are effective when used in traditional chlorine pools, they may not stand up to the harsh environment that exists inside the cell. Mineral Springs Stain and Scale was chosen because of its ability to better withstand this harsh environment. It is important to note that Mineral Springs Stain and Scale is not the same formula as Pool Magnet® Plus or Scale Inhibitor.

While some scale inhibitor products are fine for traditional pools but less effective in chlorine generator pools, there are other scale inhibitor products that would not be appropriate to use in any type of chlorine pool. These compounds are extremely chlorine sensitive and offer no benefit when used in any type of chlorinated environment. In fact, some can lead to the formation of chloramine; so not only would you get no benefit from the product, but it could cause additional problems in your pool.

Other ancillary products such as water softeners (Optimizer Plus®), water clarifiers (Polysheen® Blue) and filter aids (Sparkle Up®) are appropriate to use in both traditional chlorine pools and those equipped with a chlorine generator. Water balancing products (Balance Pak® 100, 200, 300 and Lo ‘N Slo®) may also be used in both types of pools. Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) is necessary in any outdoor chlorine pool (traditional or salt-water) to protect the hypochlorous acid from sunlight degradation.

Can sulfate based pH adjusters be used in pools equipped with a chlorine generator?

As mentioned above, calcium sulfate scale is possible; however, it is the least likely type of scale to form. The formation of this type of scale is not pH driven as it is with calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate. It is driven by the concentration of calcium and sulfate in the water. When Mineral Springs® products are used per label directions, the sulfate level in the pool typically does not reach the amount needed to force the formation of this type of scale. In addition, scientists use parameters like solubility constants for specific compounds to predict which compounds are likely to stay in solution and which are not. Looking at the solubility constant for calcium sulfate tells us that this compound is more likely to stay in solution than calcium carbonate or calcium phosphate…which confirms that this will be the last type of scale to form. These theories were also confirmed through research and testing as there was very little calcium sulfate present on scaled cell plates tested by BioGuard. For this reason, BioGuard continues to offer a safer alternative for pH adjustment in pools equipped with a chlorine generator.

In the event that calcium sulfate scale were to form, it can be more difficult to remove. Mineral Springs Cell Cleaner will remove calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate and calcium sulfate based scale. The acid in Mineral Springs Cell Cleaner is at the appropriate concentration for scale removal and no dilution is needed. Note that cell cleaning with dilute muriatic acid may not be as effective in removing calcium sulfate

Can copper based algicides be used in pools equipped with a chlorine generator?

It depends on the product. Many copper based algaecides contain copper triethanolamine. Triethanolamine is a nitrogen containing compound which is not very chlorine tolerant. Therefore, once inside the chlorine generator cell, this compound will break down resulting in free copper which has the potential to stain. This condition can result in copper based scale on the chlorine generator cell plates. In addition, because triethanolamine contains nitrogen, as it breaks down it has the potential to contribute to chloramine formation. Just as with certain sequestering agents, the use of these types of compounds will cause the active ingredient to be destroyed and could result in problematic compounds being formed.

On the other hand, Banish® does not contain triethanolamine. Banish contains polyacrylate which is extremely chlorine tolerant. This product has been tested with a high level of free chlorine with no product degradation and no staining.

OPENING YOUR POOL

Decorative Curl Line

Doing it the right way can mean the difference between a summer of fun and a summer of headaches! Follow these important (and easy) steps to ensure a smooth, carefree pool opening in the spring. And remember, we are always ready to assist with information tailored to your specific pool care needs.

Remove pool cover (skip this step for new pools)

Drain off any accumulated water on the cover away from your pool. Once removed, clean with BioGuard Stow-A-Way® to prevent sticking and odors. Store in a dry place, free of debris and protected from the sun and weather.

Fill your pool

Your pool should be filled to the middle of the skimmer opening to allow for proper circulation.

Check your pump, skimmer basket & filter

Get your water tested

Be sure to circulate pool water 24 to 48 hours before taking a water sample. Using a clean plastic container (or better still, one that we provide), scoop about one quart of water from elbow-depth. Seal the container and bring it to us for testing and analysis.

BioGuard pioneered the idea of computerized water analysis. Over the past 25 years, we have used our resources to research, develop and refine the science of water analysis. Today, our computerized water analysis system provides accurate results almost instantly. You receive personalized instructions for starting the pool. Help keep your water perfectly balanced by bringing in a water sample at least once every month during the pool season.

Test sanitizer & pH levels

You can test sanitizer and pH levels yourself using the BioGuard 1200V Test Kit or BioGuard Test Strips to check free chlorine, total bromine residuals and pH levels and Total Alkalinity.

Use the following chart to determine proper levels:

  • Free Chlorine Residual: 1.0 to 3.0 ppm
  • Total Bromine Residual: 1.0 to 3.0 ppm
  • pH: 7.4 to 7.6 is ideal range (7.2 -7.6 is acceptable)
  • Total Alkalinity: 125 to 150 ppm
  • Calcium Hardness:
    • Plaster pools: 200 to 275 ppm
    • All other types: 175 to 225 ppm

Routine maintenance

Routine maintenance is the best way to maintain your pool. And with one of BioGuard's easy-to-use 3-step pool care programs, it's as easy as 1-2-3! We even have a non-chlorine system-our SoftSwim® Program- if you prefer pool care that doesn't use chlorine to sanitize!

CLOSING YOUR POOL

Decorative Curl Line

We can show you why winterizing is the most important thing you can do to make your spring pool opening as easy as possible. There are enormous benefits to correctly closing your pool, including:

  • Protecting your pool surfaces and equipment.
  • Keeping water looking its best all winter long.
  • Protecting equipment from freeze damage.
  • Saving money on extra maintenance when you open your pool.

Whether you completely cover your pool or just reduce maintenance, we can make winterizing painless. Convenient Artic Blue® Winter Kits include the products you need for cold weather care.

Vacation Preparation

While on vacation, debris and bacteria can collect in your pool and upset the water balance. Consider a "vacation plan" to prevent problems so you can come home to a clear pool and not a messy surprise.

  • Contact us for a vacation maintenance plan.
  • Clean your pool thoroughly, brushing and vacuuming walls and floors.
  • Test pool water and make sure it's properly balanced. Anything that's out of balance-total alkalinity, pH, calcium hardness-will likely get worse when left unattended.
  • Run your pump at least eight hours a day to help prevent algae and bacteria growth. (Either set your timer or ask a neighbor to turn it on and off.)
  • Upon returning, have us perform a water analysis to ensure that your pool is properly balanced and ready for swimming.

Double Line
Double Line

Here are some pool safety reminders to help prevent accidents and to keep your family and friends safe.

Wavy or Zigzag Lines. Horizontal Thin Lines Wave. Dotted Line. Big Set Black Color. Vector Illustration.

SUPERVISION

  • Adult supervision is a key element in getting the maximum, safest enjoyment from your pool. Never let children under the age of 14 swim unsupervised in a pool. Constant, vigilant supervision of infants and children is paramount at all times.
  • One individual must assume primary responsibility for supervising the pool and consistently enforcing pool rules.
  • Set pool rules and stick by them. Don't allow running around the pool, which can easily cause slips to occur. Insist on safe diving and proper use of diving boards, slides and other water toys.
  • Pool rules should be clearly communicated and understood by all persons - young or old - who use your pool.
  • Never swim alone or allow others to do so.
  • Be sure access to your pool area meets or exceeds local codes to keep children and uninvited guests from using your pool unsupervised.
Wavy or Zigzag Lines. Horizontal Thin Lines Wave. Dotted Line. Big Set Black Color. Vector Illustration.

SWIMMING ABILITY

  • Always find out whether or not guests can swim. Supervise guests who can't swim the way you would a child.
  • If you're uncomfortable with someone's swimming abilities, make sure they stay in the shallow water area and watch them closely.
  • Pay special attention to educating young children and non-swimmers about important safety precautions.

HEADFIRST ENTRY: DIVING AND SLIDING

The chief danger for divers or headfirst sliders is serious spinal injury. Serious spinal injuries can occur even at very slow speeds if the head strikes firmly against the pool bottom or side. Any diving board, rock, platform or slide should be inspected prior to use to affirm that its installation conforms to applicable industry standards and government regulations.

DO...

  • Know the shape of the pool bottom and the water depth before you dive or slide headfirst.
  • Plan your path to avoid submerged obstacles, surface objects or other swimmers.
  • Hold your head up, arms up, and steer up with your hands.
  • Keep arms extended and head and hands up.
  • Practice carefully before you dive or slide headfirst.
  • Test the diving board for its spring before using.
  • Remember that when you dive down, you must steer up.
  • Dive straight ahead - not off the side of a diving board.

DON'T...

  • Drink and dive.
  • Dive into an above-ground pool.
  • Dive into a pool not meeting a "diving pool" standard.
  • Dive or slide headfirst in the shallow part of the pool.
  • Dive across the narrow part of pools.
  • Run and dive.
  • Dive from any place that is not specifically designed for diving.
  • Engage in horseplay on diving or sliding equipment.
  • Use diving equipment as a trampoline.
  • Do a back dive; backyard pools are not built for this dangerous dive.
  • Try fancy dives; keep the dives simple.
  • Dive or slide headfirst at or through objects such as inner tubes.
  • Put diving or sliding equipment on a pool that wasn't designed for it.
  • Swim or dive alone.
  • Dive into unfamiliar bodies of water.
Wavy or Zigzag Lines. Horizontal Thin Lines Wave. Dotted Line. Big Set Black Color. Vector Illustration.

MEDICAL PRECAUTIONS

  • Strongly consider having at least one family member trained in basic CPR.
  • Keep a wireless telephone near, but not too close, to the pool.
  • Keep these basic safety items by the pool at all times:
    • Shepherd's crook or long-handled hook
    • Life preserver
    • First aid kit including written instructions on how to administer CPR
Wavy or Zigzag Lines. Horizontal Thin Lines Wave. Dotted Line. Big Set Black Color. Vector Illustration.

ENTERTAINING

  • Plan ahead to prevent accidents and injuries, and make your entertaining truly enjoyable.
  • Keep electrical appliances a significant distance from the pool. Don't use extension cords. Use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) on any appliance or electrical device that is used poolside.
  • Use of alcohol or drugs does not mix with pool activities.
  • Games that may appear safe sometimes are not. Encourage and supervise the use of good pool games and toys. Prohibit horseplay, especially throwing or pushing someone into the pool.
  • You have the bottom line responsibility in poolside entertaining. Use good judgment to help protect yourself, your family and guests. If in doubt, prohibit use of the pool by persons whose condition you doubt. Remember, you are in charge of your pool
Wavy or Zigzag Lines. Horizontal Thin Lines Wave. Dotted Line. Big Set Black Color. Vector Illustration.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Drains, Suction Fittings, and Jets - Current grates and covers help prevent body or hair entrapment. Make sure that drain covers meet the ANSI/ASME A112.19.8M standard. Safety doors should be installed in all pool cleaner wall suction lines. Pools, spas, or hot tubs with drain covers that are broken, missing, or not adequately secured should not be used until the proper replacement has been installed.
  • Ladders, Steps and Handrails - Make sure there are adequate safe-entry and safe-exit methods in both ends of the pool and two sides of the hot tub or spa.
  • Drowning Prevention - Install and routinely inspect fences, self-closing and latching gates, baby barrier fences, and alarms. ASTM standards identify four types of pool alarms: one detects movement of the surface water, one measures sub-surface pressure waves, one monitors the perimeter using a laser, and one is a personal immersion alarm that is locked onto a child's wrist. There are also alarms for doors and gates leading to the pool or hot tub area. Learn CPR. Purchase lockable safety covers that meet the ASTM International F1346-91 (2003) Safety Standard.
  • Water Clarity - Clear water aids in identifying soakers and swimmers in distress, helps swimmers avoid collisions and is an indicator that the sanitizer, circulation, and filtration systems are functioning. Poor water clarity suggests the presence of bacteria and/or algae or nutrients for their growth, and that the circulation and filtration systems may not be working efficiently to remove the contaminants from the water.

HANDLING AND USE OF POOL AND SPA CARE PRODUCTS

  • Always read the product label and follow directions carefully. It contains important information on the proper application, handling and storage of the compound you're using. Used correctly, water maintenance products safeguard the health of your entire family. If they're mishandled, they can be hazardous.

  • Always brace liquids so they won't tip while transporting them in your car. Don't allow chemicals to stay in the car for a long period of time. Make the pool store your last stop. Unpack them as soon as you get home.

  • Always wear protective equipment (safety glasses, rubber gloves, etc.) as directed on the label of the product.

  • Never allow children to handle, measure or dispense chemicals. When adding chemicals to the pool, be sure to keep containers out of reach of children and replace lids securely on containers promptly after removing product.

  • Always open product containers in a well-ventilated area.

  • Never inhale fumes or allow products to get in your eyes, nose or mouth. When opening a product, turn your face to one side or point the container away from you. In the event of accidental contact or if product is swallowed, follow emergency advice on the product label and call your doctor and/or your local Poison Control Center.

  • Always use the exact dosage specified on the label by the manufacturer.

  • Never overdose your pool or spa. Knowing your pool or spa's exact volume will help prevent over- or under-application.

  • Always fill the bucket with water first when pre-dissolving or diluting granular or liquid products in a bucket. Add chemicals to the water.

  • Never add water to chemicals; always add the chemical to large amounts of water.

  • Always add different products to the pool or spa separately and in different areas.

  • Never mix any product with another (granular, tablet or liquid) before adding to the pool. An uncontrolled reaction such as fuming, fire or explosion could occur.

  • Always use care when broadcasting powdered products into the pool (especially on windy days) to prevent product from getting in eyes or mouth or onto skin.

  • Never smoke around chemicals. Some chemical fumes can be highly flammable, and sanitizers or oxidizers can be ignited by a lit cigarette or match.

  • Always use a separate, clean scoop for each product. Replace cap or lid securely on the proper container.

  • Never interchange measuring scoops or place wet scoops back into any chemical container.

  • Always brush off any excess and wash the area thoroughly if products come in contact with your skin or clothes.

  • Always securely close containers with the original lid following use.

  • Always clean up any spills as soon as they occur and dispose of the material in a safe manner. Small spills can be diluted by hosing off into the pool. Contact us for advice on cleaning larger spills. Never use a vacuum cleaner to clean spills. It's hazardous to throw chemicals into the trash or put spilled material back into the original container. Keep all spills away from lawns and landscaping to avoid damage. Dispose of all chemicals according to label directions.

STORAGE OF POOL AND SPA CARE PRODUCTS

  • Always keep your water maintenance products in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. If standing water is present, action must be taken to provide a dry location for any pool or spa chemicals. Avoid storing in areas that are subject to rain and excessive moisture, freezing temperatures or in direct sunlight.

  • Always keep your pool or spa maintenance products away from other household or garden chemicals and petroleum products such as fertilizers, motor oil, grease or paint. Mixing these common items with some pool products can cause the release of hazardous gasses, fire, or even an explosion.

  • Never store any liquid products directly over or directly next to dry pool products (1" and 3" tablets, granular chlorinators, shock products, pH adjusters); they may accidentally leak and contaminate other products.

  • Always keep liquid acid (muriatic) and liquid chlorine products away from each other and away from all shock products, chlorine-based products and pH adjusters.

  • Never store pool care and garden chemical products near calcium hypochlorite-based products. To determine if the product contains calcium hypochlorite, read the active ingredient section on the front of the product label.

  • Always use lawn furniture, walls, plastic buckets, shovels, rakes, lumber, other inert items or empty space (at least 3 feet) as a buffer zone between products when separating your pool care products.

  • Always keep pool products away from heat and open flame. Do not smoke in pool storage areas or when handling pool products.

  • Never store pool sanitizers and oxidizers near metal products like bicycles, lawn mowers, cars, etc., because they may cause rust.

  • Always store chemical products safely and out of the reach of small children.

  • Always keep all pool care products tightly sealed in the original container. Large, open containers often collect water and present a potential drowning hazard in areas where children play.
